The CALM Initiative and its members are regularly consulted by State and Federal agencies about the practical application of regulations that influence of ash basin closure. As a member funded industry consortium we provide input on regulations that is recognized as sound and reasonably cost conscious by both industry and environmental advocates. In general, the leaders of the CALM Initiative attempt to keep input on regulations limited to what is best for protection of human health and the environment, and feasible from a technology perspective. When there are unclear areas in the regulation the CALM Initiative is able to develop field demonstrations that can be observed, monitored and evaluated by to develop best management practices (BMPs).
