Project Description

As presented in a technical paper and presentation at the World of Coal Ash 2017, C. Hardin developed guidelines and “rules of thumb” that are recommended when working over and around partially saturated coal ash basin.  These guidelines provide valuable information for assessing when a crust is stable for access by workers and/or construction equipment.   This guidelines include:  a)  approximate minimum crust thickness for the support of construction equipment;  b) use of undrained shear strength test methods, and field observation methods to evaluate equipment ground pressure influence and requirements;  c)  importance of continuously monitoring crust stability and methods used by experienced engineers and contractors;  d) for development of Work Plans and Go/No Go procedures when working over soft and saturated ash; and coordination of the construction monitoring with the design engineer.
